Motto Motto’s newest franchisee had already spent four years with the company when he opened his own restaurant.

Bin Li joined in 2017 as manager of the brand’s third restaurant at Westfield in the Brisbane suburb of Chermside. By 2020, he had been promoted to Queensland Operations Manager, overseeing a group of restaurants and coaching future leaders. Two years later, he decided to make the leap from employee to business owner.

This meant relocating his family to Marrickville, NSW.

“Investing in the brand and taking on the Marrickville restaurant was an easy decision for us to make,” Li said. “The brand has a unique offering, backed by strong leadership and a recipe for success. Plus living in the inner sanctum of the brand gave me confidence to invest in my own location.”

A key member of the team

Group Chief Operating Officer Matt Fickling said he has never been more proud of a new team member. “It’s not every day you get to announce a new Owner Operator who was a key member of the team that helped us to scale from four restaurants to 10 since 2019, all while dealing with a global pandemic. We are motto-excited to see Bin grow his restaurant empire.”

Motto Motto was founded by William Liu, the owner of Australia’s most awarded Japanese restaurant, Sono.  The brand offers a mix of traditional and modern Japanese or Japanese-inspired dishes with the aim of bringing fine dining ingredients and quality to the world of fast, casual restaurants. There are currently restaurants Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sydney, with plans to expand into Victoria.
